As a dry fruit, it is in great demand particularly during the autumn and winter seasons.

Bandh evokes poor response in Jammu

The 48-hours long bandh call given by Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti (SAYSS) in protest against cancellation of the function organised in memory of those who were killed in the recent agitation on Amarnath land row by the administration evoked poor response with many traders and transporters ignoring the call in Jammu as well in other districts of the region.

Several commercial vehicles plied on the city roads as well as in the periphery here as usual while the business establishments remained open in the area. There was least affect on the attendance in the government as well as the private offices while all the government institutions functioned normally. The students of the government schools as well as some of the private schools within the city and its fringes attended their class as usual.

Similar was the condition in several other districts of the region. Reports received from the districts said that the Sangharsh Samiti activists indulged in forcible closure of shops and schools at several places.

Closed for five weeks, Sunday market re-opens with a bang

After remaining closed for five consecutive Sundays, the Sunday market was in full bloom today. After several weeks, the losses incurred by the Sunday market alone are to the tune of Rs 30 crores. The market was affected first by the economic blockade and then by the subsequent strikes followed by stringent curfews.

There are more than 1250 vendors in Srinagar’s Sunday Market (starting from Lal Chowk to TRC Ground), selling a wide range of goods on roadsides. The fraternity says that they have suffered a loss of more than Rs 30 crores owing to the situation that followed since July 2 when the alleged economic blockade was first imposed. President of Kashmir Sunday Market Members Union said, “Owing to the crisis our losses are huge. More than Rs 30 crores, I guess and yet we have not calculated.” He added that due to the economic blockade and the subsequent curfews, the merchandise could not reach the valley.

For some vendors it is the only day of earning for them and for rest of the week, they sit idle.

Gun can’t be made state’s medium of expression: Mufti

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today cautioned Government of India against its apparent policy of drift and inaction in Kashmir.

In a statement issued here today he said the problem wouldn’t disappear by ignoring it or seeking quick fix solutions of fire-fighting nature.

Urging the Centre to revive and push forward the Kashmir resolution process with political courage and sincerity of purpose, he said it is time that we respond to the public sentiment and take concrete political measures for the resolution of the problem instead of resorting to strong-arm tactics to suppress their aspirations. “Addressing the public sentiment with open mind is a challenge and gun could not be the state’s medium of expression in the current scenario,” he asserted.

Most corrupt states: Jammu anad Kashmir at No: 3

Jammu and Kashmir retains the dubious distinction of being among the top ten most corrupt states of India with fig leaf type relief that in the list, it has been overtaken by Assam and Bihar at number 1 and 2 slots respectively.

This less than nominal change in the dubious order is known to be more because of the higher qualification of Assam than an improvement in the standard of administration and public life in Jammu and Kashmir. These facts brought out by Transparency International India and the Centre for Media Studies (CMS) Delhi in the India Corruption Study 2007 make a mockery of the erstwhile coalition government’s claim of having cleansed public life from the menace of corruption in the state.

Interestingly, this is one of the frequent theme songs of former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and patron of People’s Democratic Party Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. Jammu and Kashmir achieved the dubious distinction of being 2nd most corrupt state in the country in a similar study conducted by the same agency in the year 2005.

Congress scotches at rumours over Patil’s resignation

The Congress on Monday scotched rumours of Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s head rolling over Delhi’s serial blasts that spread like wildfire with claims that he was not invited to an emergency meeting of the party leaders conveyed by Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her residence to discuss internal security.

The fact was that he was pre-occupied with the prior fixed official engagements that prevented him from rushing to the meeting decided at the last minute.

A meeting discussing internal security sans Shivraj Patil whose subject it is led to the natural interpretation repeatedly aired by the electronic media that he was being axed and hence Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi emphatically affirmed that he has not been asked to resign.

Mainstream politics gasping for breath

Trapped between political disconnect between Delhi and Srinagar on the one hand and suffocating home ground-hostility on the other, mainstream political parties in Kashmir Valley are getting squeezed into a tight corner. The ‘nationalist’ portion of their agenda is already a casualty in the face of a radical shift in the local discourse. The setting is such that even mere talk of (assembly) elections sounds grossly incongruent, if not blasphemous. One has yet to find anyone willing to stand up and be counted unambiguously. It has never been so hazardous for them; not even in the run-up to the 1996 polls when militancy was at its peak. Obviously, collective sense of emotional hurt, fuelled by brazenly militaristic response to largely peaceful upsurge of protest, is politically more lethal than the fear of gun. Mainstream politics has been totally immobilised along with its ideological agenda although every Tom, Dick and Harry in that category is protected by hordes of state-provided gun-men. ‘Protected’ species is feeling like the most endangered species. Main reason being that Delhi’s inexplicable non-political attitude, smeared by perceived sectarian double standard in dealing with identical situations, is catalysing an overpowering social cohesion that is incompatible with mainstream politics.

Confused—and confusing—utterances of some of the mainstream ‘stars’ relating to topical issues, as also their body language, is quite revealing. It depicts the trajectory of conversion from an ‘Indian-Kashmiri’ to ‘Kashmiri Indian’ and down to ‘Kashmiri’. Though vastly different in size, reach and stature, National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, two main propellers of the mainstream politics in the Valley, more or less equally symbolise the predicament of surviving a hostile homeground.

Saudi government decision disappoints intending Hajj pilgrims

After Saudi government having turned down the demands of enhancing the Hajj quota for Jammu and Kashmir this year, the last hopes of the left-out Hajj aspirants of the valley seem to have been painfully dashed.

Thousands of intending Hajj pilgrims, whose names did not figure in the list after the draw of lots was conducted recently, have been highly disappointed after Saudi government outrightly declined the requests of Central Hajj Committee (CHC) of India to increase the Hajj quota for the J & K.

Pertinently, Saudi government has turned down the requests of all those countries who were seeking a chance of quota enhancements for their respective intending Hajj pilgrims. This has finally dispelled the long drawn confusion among thousands of left out Hajj pilgrims of Jammu and Kashmir, regarding the quota enhancement for the state.

Election Commission in a bind over poll timing in Jammu and Kashmir

The Election Commission is in a bind on holding the Jammu and Kashmir elections on time in October as it got a divided response instead of a clear picture in an interaction it had with the political parties here on Monday to elicit their views. Though, new government of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had assumed office on November 2, 2002, the term of present assembly expires on November 22.

Sources said the three member Commission itself was divided when it sat down in the afternoon to review the party-wise interaction it carried out, with the majority preferring to defer the polls until the summer. Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami, who took the initiative to start the poll process by consulting the parties, was reported to be in minority to complete the polls before the 6-year term of the Assembly ends in November.

No final decision was, however, taken as the sources said the Commission would summon the Union Home Secretary and the State Chief Secretary as also the Defence Secretary after he returns from the U.S. to assess the ground situation.

Independence not a viable option for Kashmir : Omar

National Conference President Omar Abdullah has ruled out ‘Azadi’ (independence) or accession to Pakistan as a viable option for Kashmir and slammed the Centre for losing the ‘best opportunity’ to resolve the issue during Prevez Musharraf’s tenure as the country’s President.

Abdullah, a prominent Kashmiri leader, told a television channel in an interview that the situation in kashmir was “bad” and the alienation of the people was a cause for concern.

He also denied that ISI was involved in the recent widespread protests in the valley in the wake of the Amarnath land transfer issue and said the protests were an upheaval of people’s pent up simmering anger.

Rani Mukerji hates being called a Yash Raj heroine

Rani Mukerji is upset about being branded as a resident Yash Raj Films heroine despite having done a large number of films with the banner.

‘What exactly do people mean by this? Agreed Rani has done comparatively more films with the Yash Raj banner. But that’s because any heroine in Bollywood would be foolish to turn down an author-backed heroine centric part like ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’. And so what if the film didn’t work? She’s very proud of the film and rates it among her best films,’ a source close to the actress told agencies.

Rani has recently featured in three Yash Raj Films’ productions ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’, ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’ and ‘Ta Ra Rum Pum’. Earlier, she has done films like ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, ‘Veer Zaara’ and ‘Hum Tum’ for the banner.

Farhan’s ‘Rolling Stone’ dream comes true with ‘Rock On’

Actor-director Farhan Akhtar is elated with the cast and composers of ‘Rock On’ making it to the cover of popular music magazine Rolling Stone. The September issue of the magazine features Farhan, Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli and composer trio Shankar Ehasaan-Loy on the cover, all looking dapper in black.

“Doing a film where I play a rock musician is a dream come true. But being on the cover of Rolling Stone? Man, that’s beyond a dream,” Farhan remarked. “As a teenager I used to dream of being in Rolling Stone. Now it’s come true. I’m quite kicked about it. We’re featured because we’ve made the first film based on rock music from this country. Also, let’s not forget Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy are full-on musicians even if me and the rest of the cast are not,” Farhan said.

“But yes, the only Indian musician who featured before us on the Rolling Stone cover was A R Rahman. So I can’t pretend I’m not kicked,” he added.
