Minister tried to kill me

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Phalguni Yadav, who broke his leg after Bihar's Food and Consumer Minister Narendra Singh allegedly pushed him from a podium at a public meeting in Jamui district, Thursday charged that it was an attempt to kill him.

Yadav was first taken to a local hospital in Jamui, about 200 km from the state capital here. Later, he was brought to Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Jammu's Heritage point morphs into commercial site

Jammu's Heritage point morphs into commercial site The much pro claimed "Heritage Point" near Government Degree College for Women Gandhi Nagar on National Highway is morphing into a commercial site due to the lack of coordination between two prime civic bodies viz Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Jammu Development Authority (JDA).

Officials of these two departments are accusing each other of usurping their domains due to which this point has been turned into a "big commercial site". More than 18 large hoardings with pasted advertisements on about 300 meters stretch are making the landscape of "Heritage Point" ugly.

Ironically, stern warnings issued by the district administration not with standing, various political parties, big companies and educational institutions' hoardings continue to deface public property much to the displeasure of city residents and tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir.

Fuel surcharge on Income tax likely

Finance Minister P Chidambaram has expressed willingness to lower the customs and excise duties on the petroleum products to minimise hike in petrol and diesel prices in lieu of the sky rocketing international crude oil prices.

He has, however, put a rider that the revenue loss that the government suffers should be compensated by allowing him to levy a 2 per cent surcharge on income tax and corporate tax that would fetch not less than Rs 6,000 crores.

This was, however, only one of the suggestions he put forward before Petroleum Minister Murli Deora while discussing with him the heavy losses the state-owned oil companies have been suffering from the rising crude oil prices across the globe.

We're ready for inquiry

Pakistan has agreed to probe the violation of the cease fire in Tangdhar sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

This followed a meeting of the battalion commanders of the units of both sides deployed in the sector. Earlier Pakistan had refused to acknowledge that its soldiers had fired across the LoC violating the ceasefire.

"The meeting was held following pressure exerted by the Indian side. We had asked for a meeting in the morning but this was refused. They finally relented in the evening,'' the official said in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh described as worri some the truce violation that occurred when Pakistani troops opened fire in the Tangdhar sector Tuesday evening.

The incident, however, will not lead to any rescheduling of President Pratibha Patil's visit to the Tangdhar sector on May 23, officials in the national capital said.

The director general of military operations (DGMO), Lt. Gen. A.S. Sekhon, spoke on the hotline with his Pakistani counterpart Major General A S Pasha at 3 pm, an Indian Army officer said in New Delhi.

Signs Of The Times

Disturbing news of blasts and killings. Rising numbers of those killed and injured and shaken. In fact, shaken we all are. And as the small screen kept coming up with details of the aftermath of those blasts in the crowded shopping areas of the walled city of Jaipur it got so depressing...chaos and senseless killings leaves one feeling low and drained out. In fact, in that same mood bordering on feeling low and depressed ,I picked up this book which had landed last week for review.

‘Old Delhi, New Delhi. My Experiences' (UBSPD) by Pushan Kumar Dutta, isn't one of those fact laden, heavy takes which get hard to read. On the contrary, written in the story form, along the strain what the aging writer has witnessed all these years, it took me to a different era altogether. The very fact that he isn't a writer in that conventional sense, but a retired pharmaceutical chemist, has made all the difference. He is not trying to show off his writing process, rather offloading one incident after another, webbed in a story like form. And though he does not draw comparisons in the actual sense but, then, they invariably come up what everyday living was in those yesteryears and what it stands
reduced to now, in today's so called ‘developed' phase.

A biography of the executed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein is being drafted and could be released by the end of the year, his Amman-based lawyer Khalil Duleimi said Wednesday.

Duleimi led Saddam's defence team of about 20 prominent Arab and nonArab lawyers, including former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark and former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas.

The employment department in Kashmir valley has received 39000 applications against 3574 job vacancies in 12 days from the qualified candidates for different posts in various departments even as the department is expecting thousands of more applications before the last date for submission of application forms expires on May 15.

Development process governed by justice not political considerations: Azad

Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that the development initiative launched by his government in Jammu & Kashmir was governed by the principle of justice and not party or electoral considerations.

Addressing the Bandipora District Development Board meeting here today, Mr. Azad said that he was the first Chief Minister of the State in 60 years who had worked above political considerations in so far as development matters were concerned. Supreme Court to hear case against Sridevi and Boney Kapoor

Bollywood actress Sridevi and hubby Boney Kapoor are surely making news but for all the wrong reasons. The couple are due to appear in Supreme Court on Monday in relation to the lawsuit filed against them seeking a trial against them for the alleged fraud involving bouncing of cheques worth over Rs 96.6 million given to a film financier.

Filed by financier Madhu Gupta, who runs Mumbai based Photo Films Industries, the lawsuit is to come up for hearing before a bench consisting of Chief Justice K.G.Balakrishnan, Justice R.V.Raveendran and Justice M.K.Sharma.

Gupta has moved the apex court challenging a Bombay High Court order, which on March 26, 2008 had stalled Sridevi's trial in the case.

In her petition to the apex court, Gupta claimed that the actress and her husband had availed themselves of financial help and credit facility from their business concerns. The couple had issued three cheques, one for Rs 92,50,484, one for Rs 8,41,85,682 and another for Rs 31,62,074 to discharge their legally enforceable liability. However, all the three cheques had bounced.

Coalition's last durbar renews many political dreams

As the move offices are reopening here tomorrow, it will be the last darbar move of the present coalition government.

The move offices are opening here at a time when almost all the mainstream parties have geared up for the coming assembly elections. While Congress and PDP have managed to keep the coalition government intact since 2002, but right now the two coalition partners are politically and ideologically poles apart. This is understandable since the two parties are in the election mode.

Some reports indicate that UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi and prime minister Dr Manohan Singh are very keen for an electoral alliance between Congress and PDP against the wishes of chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. But only time can tell whether or not such an alliance takes a practical shape.

MD appointed after superseding 12 officers

As the stalemate continues between the contractors and management of State Forest Corporation over the fixation of rates, appointment of a Junior State Forest Services Officer Abdul Qayoom Khan as Managing Director of the corporation has raised doubts over the intent of the state government.

The appointment comes at a time when the contractors, mostly belonging to Jammu region, backed by a powerful political lobby are seeking 100 percent increase in the rates for the extraction and transportation of timber from the corporation. Khan has superseded twelve officers who were in the race owing to their seniority and experience.

Khan was appointed in the State Forest Services in 1978 and by way of the controversial selection list of 1995, which has been quashed by the Supreme Court, he got inducted into IFS and his year of allotment was arbitrarily fixed as 1986. The 12 officers which are senior to Khan include 7 direct IFS recruits and 5 inductees.
